Inside Out Justice

Inside Out Justice is a prison reform advocacy organisation founded by Scott Dylan in 2025. Born from first-hand experience of the UK civil justice system, the organisation campaigns for proportional sentencing, humane treatment, and rehabilitation grounded in dignity rather than punishment.

Why Inside Out Justice Exists

In 2024, Scott Dylan was imprisoned as a civil prisoner for contempt of court. The experience exposed deep structural failings within the justice system — overcrowding, inadequate mental health care, and the systematic exclusion of civil prisoners from early-release schemes designed for criminal offenders.

Unlike those convicted of criminal offences, civil prisoners occupy a legal grey area. They are detained without the same protections, pathways to release, or access to rehabilitation programmes. For many, the punishment far exceeds the nature of the dispute.

Inside Out Justice was created to challenge these failures — not from a position of theory, but from lived experience.

The Campaign for Civil Justice Reform

Inside Out Justice focuses on several areas where the UK justice system falls short of its obligations to civil prisoners and non-violent offenders:

Proportional Sentencing

Calling for sentencing guidelines that reflect the civil nature of disputes, rather than applying blanket custodial measures designed for criminal cases.

Early-Release Equality

Campaigning for civil prisoners to be included in early-release and home detention curfew schemes, from which they are currently excluded.

Mental Health in Custody

Advocating for trauma-informed mental health support within prisons, particularly for those detained for civil matters who arrive without prior experience of the criminal justice environment.

Rehabilitation Over Punishment

Promoting a justice model that prioritises rehabilitation, education, and reintegration rather than purely punitive measures.

“No one should be defined forever by their lowest moment. Systems should heal, not harm.”
Scott Dylan

Challenging the Narrative

Public discourse around imprisonment often reduces complex situations to simple moral judgements. Inside Out Justice seeks to shift this narrative by highlighting the human stories behind the statistics — the families affected, the mental health consequences, and the long-term damage caused by disproportionate detention.

Scott Dylan uses his platform through writing, media engagement, and direct advocacy to challenge outdated assumptions about justice, redemption, and the purpose of imprisonment. His forthcoming book on prison and justice reform draws on personal testimony and systemic analysis to make the case for meaningful legislative change.

A Vision for Reform

Inside Out Justice’s vision is straightforward: a justice system that distinguishes between civil and criminal matters, treats all people in custody with dignity, and invests in rehabilitation rather than warehousing.

The organisation advocates for:

  • Legislative reform to create distinct pathways for civil prisoners
  • Mandatory mental health assessments and support upon detention
  • Independent oversight of civil imprisonment conditions
  • Alternatives to custody for non-violent civil disputes
  • Public education on the realities of civil imprisonment in the UK
