Are Mental Health Meetings the Future of Worker Wellbeing?

Mental health is becoming an increasingly important part of our working lives, both for us as entrepreneurs, and our employees.

In order to create a happy and productive work environment, we must make sure that everyone’s mental health is addressed. It’s also crucial to implement procedures in the workplace that help people improve their mental health when they need to.

One of the things you can introduce to help your employees’ mental health is regular mental health meetings. These meetings can be used to keep track of how your employees feel in the workplace and is a time for you to demonstrate that you care about their well-being.

What is a mental health meeting?

A mental health meeting is a time set aside for you to talk to your employees about their mental health.

It could be a formal meeting in the office, or you could make it informal by holding the meeting in a local coffee shop or cafe where you’ll both feel more relaxed.

What should you discuss in a mental health meeting?

This meeting is a chance for your employee to talk about how they feel in their job and discuss any of the feelings they may have about their role.

Here are some common questions you can ask during mental health meetings:

  • Which moods do you most commonly feel at work?
  • How happy do you feel at work?
  • Do you feel like you have a good work-life balance?
  • Do you feel supported at work?
  • Have your sleeping patterns or appetite changed since working here?
  • Has anything in your personal life been affected by working here?
  • Have you ever felt upset after a day at work?
  • Is your workload too much?

How regular should mental health meetings be?

The regularity of mental health meetings will depend on your business. With most companies, I would suggest meeting with your employees once a quarter to check in on them.

You should also make it clear that your employees can also request additional meetings whenever they need them if they’re struggling.

If one of your employees shares in their mental health meetings that they aren’t doing well, this is a sign to increase the regularity of their meetings.

What are the benefits of regular mental health meetings?

There is a range of benefits that come from holding regular mental health meetings, but most importantly is that you’ll form a better relationship with your employees. This will in turn make them feel more satisfied and valued in their role.

Once your employees feel supported and listened to, they’ll be much more motivated and productive in their roles which will help make the running of your business a lot easier.
